The breed is easily recognized by a compact body, loose ears, a short coat that comes in tri-color, and a white tail tip. The skull is broad and rounded. The eyes are usually of hazel color and the nose is black. The breed stands about 13-16 inches at the shoulder and weighs from 20 to 25 pounds. There are two size varieties within the breed. These hounds usually come in tri-color (white, black and tan) and have a short coat that lies closely to the body.

These hounds do not need a lot of care; their short coat looks well provided with only occasional baths. These dogs are prone to such disorders as heart and back problems, epilepsy, and dwarfism, but on the whole, the breed is very hardy.
