The precise origin of this breed is unclear. Records show that similar dogs existed in Greece about 400 B.C. and 200 B.C. in England; brought by Romans as small rabbit hounds which were later cross bred with English local hounds. They were popular with British monarchy circa 1300 and 1400’s. This breed loves to play especially with children; they jump and play for hours and use their mouth to grab and chew (not snapping or biting.) They have a keen sense of smell which makes them sometimes non attentive while tracking. All of which can be trained out of them.
This breed is characterized by a short smooth coat and long soft ears. All dogs of this breed have a gentle and pleading expression what makes them cute family pets. The usual colours seen in these dogs are tri-colour (black, tan and white) and tan and white (also called lemon and white or red and white.) According to the standard of the breed, they can be any hound color. White feet and a white tip of the tail in these hounds make them easy to follow in the field.
