If you have discovered a true love of Beagles and you seriously consider the prospect of participating in breeding programs, you are going to have to come a long way towards reaching your goals. The first thing you must learn, is how to define a qualified breeder and avoid contacts with profit-oriented 'puppy-mills'.
A true breeder is not concerned about making a fast deal. Breeders are involved in major breeding projects and they invest their funds and efforts to the improvement of the breed. Therefore, they consider scanning potential buyers for breed compatibility and commitment as a paramount assignment to their duties.
A qualified breeder is highly versed about the breed, and he or she will definitely expect you to be sufficiently educated. You may have to learn something about the history of the breed or some scientific material on the breed's current condition.
The breeder will do his or her best to study the conditions in your house and ask you about other pets or children in your house. You should not rule out the possibility of a visit by the breeder to your home, because this is the best way for him or her to make sure that you are actually fit to keep a dog. Remember, if the breeder considers you unfit for some reason, he or she may never sell a puppy to you.
There are also a few things for you to consider when choosing the right breeder. Pay attention to the condition of the pups in the breeder's house. How many are they? If you see flocks of pups or cages in the backyard with many pups in them, consider another option, because in this case you are probably dealing with a 'pup mill'. A true breeder will be registered at the local kennel club. When talking about pups, true breeders are not only eager to exhibit their Beagles' positive traits, but they are also open about deviations in health and appearance.
Health problems may include spinal problems, epilepsy, skin problems, poor eye conditions, which may include cataracts or glaucoma. These are serious concerns, and they should be treated in due time in order to avoid blindness. Beagles should receive occasional brushing to avoid skin problems and regular examination of their ears for infection.
